Santa Maria is still in need of a head athletics coach, flag football assistant coach, bocce coach and Jr’s basketball assistant coach. Our season begins in February, please reach out to Bianca if you are interested in making a difference in the lives of our athletes this spring season. Team volunteer opportunities are also available in Lompoc for all spring sports.

Partnership Halftime Shows during Allan Hancock College Mens Basketball Games

Northern Santa Barbara County has had a couple of opportunities recently that have made for some exciting nights for our athletes. We have been able to help introduce the starting line up, cheer in the stands, and play a scrimmage during the halftime of the game. We even got a few of our LETR officers to get involved during one of these scrimmages for an ultimate local unified basketball experience! 

Thank you Allan Hancock College Athletics for hosting us during your tournament. Our Athletes has an amazing time, good luck to your men’s basketball team the rest of the season! 🏀🏀

Cop on a Rooftop

Thanks to law enforcement agencies across our footprint, Special Olympics Southern California raised $42,200 this year for the Cop on a Rooftop fundraiser at Dunkin’ Donuts locations on November 2.

Fall Games Recap
11/21/2018

Northern Santa Barbara County took a delegation of two softball teams three tennis players and two golfers to Fall Games. Everyone did an amazing job. Hannah Rogers received a 4th place ribbon and Jason Lock brought home a gold medal in golf. Our three tennis players brought home gold, silver and bronze. The Lompoc Braves softball team worked hard for their silver medal and last but not least the Santa Maria Rebels softball team won all four of their games and were gold medal champions. Great job everyone!

North Divisional Fall Games

Northern Santa Barbara County represented at NDFG with two softball teams, two soccer teams and tennis players.

Everyone stepped up and shined during their competitions. For the soccer competitions The Lompoc Landsharks received a Silver medal and The Santamarian’s received a bronze medal. For the softball competitions our Lompoc Braves received a bronze medal and the Santa Maria Rebels received a Silver medal. At the Minami Tennis courts we had athletes competing in skills as well as singles. They received bronze, silver and gold medals. Thank you to all the coaches that prepared our athletes for this competition and congratulations to all of our athletes!

Summer Team Wellness

Flag Football Demo

On August 31st Special Olympics Northern Santa Barbara County hosted a flag football clinic with the help of the football program at Allan Hancock College. There were about 25 athletes from Santa Barbara, Lompoc and Santa Maria who were participaing. The Allan Hancock College football team ran different skills stations teaching our athletes basic skills and fundamentals. Spring of 2019 will be the first time Special Olympics Southern California will be offering Flag Football as a competitive sport. The clinic concluded with a Unified scrimmage and a Bulldogs huddle. Thank you to Allan Hancock College for supporting our athletes.

Hello Sports Fans,

Our swimming, athletics, basketball, & bocce teams have been working hard throughout the season. Their dedication to their sports and improvement throughout the season will be showcased at the upcoming Summer Games. We are taking one basketball team, two bocce teams, twelve athletics athletes and eight swimmers to Summer Games. This is a two day competition held at Long Beach State University. As our Spring Season comes to a close in June, we look forward to our first Summer Season. Bowling has moved from the Fall to the Summer as a standalone sport. This season will be from the middle of June to the Middle of August. Bowlers get ready!

Flag Football is a new sport coming to Special Olympics Southern California. To kick off the sport we will be hosting a flag football camp. Keep an eye out for more information.

Our Spring Season has begun! Our athletes are participating in athletics, basketball, bocce, and swimming.

Golf has been moved from a spring to a fall sport. In order to allow our athletes to stay connected with the sport we will be hosting a golf clinic. Detailed information will be available in the next couple of months.

 

Flag Football is a new sport coming to Special Olympics Southern California. To kick off the sport we will be hosting a flag football camp towards the end of Summer. Keep an eye out for more information.

 

On April 28th, 2018 we will be hosting our Harry Wood Area Games at Pioneer Valley High School (675 Panther Dr. Santa Maria, Ca 93454). Bull Canyon Run

The 20th annual Bull Canyon Run will kick off at 7:30 a.m.with a 10K run/walk, 8:00 a.m. with a 5K run/walk, and at 9:30a.m. we will host a .5K (5 and under) and 1K (6-9 yrs.) Kid’sFun Run. Fee: $30 for adult runners/walkers, $25 for youth and active military. Kid’s Fun Run is only $15. All participantswill receive a T-shirt, medal, water, sports drinks, and morning snacks (fruit). All proceeds benefit Special Olympics Northern Santa Barbara County.

AVP Campaign

The 2018 campaign will take place April 4 - May 1, 2018.

In 2017, we joined Johnny Hekker from the Los Angeles Rams and celebrated champions by shopping at Albertsons, Vons and Pavilions in July & August to support Special Olympics Southern California athletes. Shoppers donated at checkout to support local Special Olympics athletes from July 8 - August 8 and we raised over $1,242,000 through this campaign in 2017!

David Amavisca - Floor Hockey Coach of the Season

David Amavisca has been volunteering with Special Olympics for 10 years and coaching for 8 years. He coaches floor hockey, softball, and basketball for Northern Santa Barbara County. In and out of Special Olympics, David has been coaching in the community for about 33 years throughout the Santa Maria Area with youth football, basketball, and girls softball. He loves helping with Special Olympics because of his son Elias who is an Athlete in Santa Maria. If it werent for his sons disabilities David and his Wife Yndira Amavisca would have never known about the program and all it has to offer. Ouside of Special Olympics David likes to spend time with Grandkids, go camping, and build things.

Special Olympics Southern California Northern Santa Barbra County would like to introduce our Global Messengers

Taylor Stewart: Taylor has won over 100 medals, her favorite sports are Track and Field, tennis, and bocce. Her favorite Special Olympics memory is saying the Pledge of Allegiance at our local competitions and being on local news promoting the program.

Scott Merrell: Scotts is currently employed at a local Santa Maria restaurant. His favorite Special Olympics memory is having the opportunity to compete at the 2015 Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles. Floor Hockey and Softball are Scotts favorite sports.

Savannah Barclay: Savannah’s favorite hobbies are dancing, singing, and acting. Her greatest accomplishments is helping spread the word to the end the word while in high school. She also plans to host and R-WORD rally at the college she is currently attending. She also enjoys eating Mexican food with her family.

Kristy Soriano: Kristy attended 5 speaking engagement events in 2017. She enjoys volunteering her time for the local Special Olympics program and loves being around family. She is looking forward to attending 2018 Summer Games.

Team Wellness Kick-Off!

Team Wellness is an exciting and unique health and wellness program designed for individuals with and without intellectual disabilities. Participants are led by a trained wellness coach and receive guidance, direction, and encouragement. This program complements any training you might already be doing, whether you are an athlete, coach, or family member. Not only is it easy to follow, but it's easy to sustain on your own after the program.
