Support An Athlete Campaign
11/18/2017

Wouldn’t you like to be part of something unique and powerful that has changed the lives of local youth and adults with intellectual disabilities? By supporting the Special Olympics’ Santa Barbara “Support an Athlete” campaign we are able to ensure that our athletes receive high quality year-round sports training and competition opportunities in an inclusive culture that stresses athletic excellence, rewards determination, emphasizes health and celebrates personal achievement no matter the athlete’s age or skill level.

Meet Andres Santa Maria.  Andres has been competing in our School Games Athletic and Soccer programs since 2011. He is now a junior at Santa Barbara High School and has made a tremendous impact during his first year competing with the Santa Barbara Special Olympics Soccer team.  “He pretty much does it all. Andres has the ability to move from offense to defense like nobody else on the field,” says his soccer coach Jerry Siegel during the presentation to Andres at Santa Barbara Athletic Roundtable November’s Athlete of the Month awards lunch. Andres has also been chosen to attend the Special Olympics of Southern California’s Fall Games in Fountain Valley as a representative from Santa Barbara.  This will be his first time attending the games. Through the opportunities we provide to our athletes through sports, they can see themselves for their abilities, not disabilities.  They become confident and empowered by their accomplishments.

I am hoping to appeal to the inner athlete in you who remembers the thrill and pride while competing on the field, court or in the water.  Your “Support an Athlete” donation will ensure that our local athletes develop physical fitness, build their self-esteem and demonstrate courage. It is through the generosity of our community that we are able to continue to provide these life enhancing programs. Without your support, none of this would be possible.

Thank you for your generosity and consideration!

Fall Games Recap
11/18/2017

A good time was had by all during our attending the Fall Games this year.  We had a delegation of over 40 athletes who competed in tennis, softball, bowling and soccer.  Santa Barbara' County's individual medal count was 4 gold, 9 silver and 3 bronze.  Both our softball and soccer team took silver medals home from their perspective divisions.

One of the most memorable moments was our final soccer game.  Our team played 4 games on Saturday with a game count of 3 wins 1 loss.  During their final game on Sunday they were down in the first half 2-0.  During the final 4 minutes of the 2nd half, Andres Santa Maria scored 2 goals to tie up the score. After a double overtime and 3 penalty kicks from both teams during the shoot-out, our goalie Chris “En Fuego” Powers kicks the winning goal to take the silver medal.  The follwing video is of the winning point which exemplifies why we do what we do!
