DESTINATION 2030
Building the Future of Sports at Special Olympics Southern California
For more than 55 years, Special Olympics Southern California has created opportunities for athletes through the power of sports.
Our Destination 2030: Sports Plan is our bold vision for the future of sports at SOSC. Built on feedback from athletes, coaches, volunteers, and community members, the plan is designed to create more opportunities, welcome more athletes into our movement, and ensure that no athlete is left on the sidelines.

WHAT'S CHANGING?
Supporting 10,000 Athletes by 2030
Our goal is to grow quality sports programs that can support 10,000 community athletes by 2030, creating opportunities for thousands more people across Southern California to experience the benefits of Special Olympics.
Two New Sports: Pickleball & Cornhole
We’re expanding opportunities for athletes of all ability levels by introducing pickleball and cornhole, giving athletes new ways to learn, connect, and compete through both traditional and Unified sports.
Dedicated Seasons for Basketball & Softball
By 2030, basketball and softball will join bowling as standalone sports seasons, creating more time to train, develop skills, and compete.
More Championship-Level Competition
A new sports structure will provide athletes with more opportunities to compete throughout the year and more championship-level experiences.
A Third Multi-Sport Season
By 2030, we’ll introduce a third multi-sport season in the winter, creating a calendar with more balance, greater flexibility, and better experiences for both athletes and coaches.
Why We're Making These Changes
We asked our community what they wanted to see in the future of sports at SOSC.
Athletes told us they wanted more opportunities to compete. Coaches wanted more time to help athletes train, grow, and succeed. And together, we recognized the need to prepare for future growth.
Together, we’ll make sure that no athlete is left on the sidelines
As we grow to serve more athletes, add new sports, and expand competition opportunities, we’ll need more community members to step up and help make it all possible.
Sign up to become a coach. Special Olympics coaches help athletes with intellectual disabilities build confidence, make friends, develop leadership skills, and discover what’s possible when someone believes in them. Every coach helps create opportunities that extend far beyond practice and competition.
