Jose Manso was looking for a way for his son to channel his competitive energy. In 2016, that search led them to tennis and the newly formed Special Olympics Southern California (SOSC) tennis team in Los Alamitos.
What began as an opportunity for his son, has grown into something much bigger. A decade later, he continues to volunteer and coach as the Local Program Coordinator.
“Now that I’ve been doing it [coaching] for years, it’s become a part of me,” said Manso.
For Manso, sports are essential to everyone, especially for people with intellectual disabilities Along with fitness benefits, sports enhance athletes’ self-esteem and relationships with others. Over the past 10 years as a coach, he has seen athletes develop confidence, form lasting friendships, and create a stronger, more connected community.
Manso is especially grateful for the chance to coach many of the same athletes over the years, witnessing their growth, achievements, and increasing confidence along the way. Even when his son stepped away to focus on his studies, Manso’s commitment to coaching continued.
“I told him, ‘Well, if you’re not gonna do it this year, I’m gonna keep doing it [coaching],’” Manso said.
Manso loves to work with the athletes, and the devoted parents and fellow coaches who help make the program possible. Together, they create an environment that promotes support, confidence, and perseverance.
“I’ve seen perseverance in these athletes through them learning how to stay with the game, understanding how it works, and not giving up in the middle of it,” Manso shared.
When reflecting on a decade of coaching, Manso encourages people to become involved in any capacity because of how rewarding it is to serve the community of Special Olympics of Southern California.
We’re grateful for coaches like Jose Manso and the dedication they bring to Special Olympics every day. As our athlete community continues to grow, we’re always looking for more coaches to help create opportunities for athletes across Southern California.
