Athletics offers a wide range of events, from the 100 meters and hurdle events to the marathon, from the high jump and the long jump to the shot put, and from the relays to the wheelchair events.

Athletics  is one of Special Olympics most popular sports.

Running Events
  • 25, 50, 100 200, 400, 800, 1,500, and 5,000 Meter Run
  • 4 x 100 Meter Relay
Race Walking Events
  • 50, 100, 400, and 800 Meter
Field Events
  • Long Jump
  • Shot Put
  • Softball Throw
The following athletics events provide meaningful competition for athletes with lower ability levels and/or wheelchairs:

  • 10, 25, and 50 Meter Assisted Walking Events
  • 10, 25, and 30 (slalom) Meter Wheelchair Race
  • 25, 30 (slalom), and 50 (slalom) Meter Motorized Wheelchair Race
  • Standing Long Jump
  • Tennis Ball Throw
  • Shot Put – Wheelchair
This sport is offered in the following locations:
  • Inland Empire (Barstow, Desert, Menifee, Mojave, Rim Mountain, T.E.A.M., Temecula, West San Bernardino)
  • Kern County
  • Los Angeles County (Long Beach, South Bay, Westside, East San Gabriel Valley, Pomona, Southeast Los Angeles – Norwalk & Whittier, San Gabriel Valley, Santa Clarita & Tri-Valley)
  • San Diego County
  • San Luis Obispo County
  • Santa Barbara County
  • Ventura County


All athletes and coaches are required to submit a waiver to participate in SOSC activities.
