We are so excited to announce musician and Special Olympics Southern California athlete, Scott Yamashiro, as part of our 2024 Heart of a Champion entertainment. Guests will be treated to the delightful sounds of Scott’s smooth saxophone playing, set against the backdrop of the picturesque Pasea Hotel.

Scott Yamashiro’s involvement with Special Olympics Southern California (SOSC) since the mid-2000s has been transformative. Through participating in various sports like track, basketball, volleyball, bowling, swimming, golf, and bocce, he found a supportive community where he feels accepted and valued. The nurturing Special Olympics environment not only provided him with opportunities for competition but also enabled him to forge meaningful friendships and connections.

Performing at SOSC events has also allowed Scott to combine his love for music with his passion for athletics, showcasing his talents to a wider audience and spreading joy through his performances.

Scott’s journey with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) showcases the transformative power of support and nurturing that comes from environments like Special Olympics Southern California. Despite his diagnosis at a young age, Scott’s family and therapists recognized his interests and strengths, paving the way for his development.

Music emerged as a significant passion for Scott, and he found supportive mentors in his piano and saxophone teachers. Their dedication over nearly three decades speaks volumes about their commitment to Scott’s growth and well-being.

Before the pandemic, Scott found joy in sharing his musical talents with others, particularly at local nursing homes. His involvement with Saddleback College’s Jazz Lab Ensemble, facilitated by Joey Sellers, allowed him to further explore his musical abilities, playing the alto saxophone since 2010.

Overall, Scott’s story highlights the importance of recognizing and nurturing individuals’ strengths and interests, regardless of their neurodiversity. Through support, encouragement, and inclusive communities like Special Olympics, individuals with ASD can thrive and contribute meaningfully to society.

Special Olympics has provided Scott with a circle of friends and teammates who accept him for who he is. He feels comfortable and safe while participating in Special Olympics.
