Bill Shumard and Special Olympics athletes at the 2022 Hall of Fame

The Bill Shumard Hall of Fame Awards represents the highest honor within the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) program. Named in tribute to Bill Shumard, who served as CEO of Special Olympics Southern California (SOSC) for 15 years and played a pivotal role in the success of the LETR program. These awards celebrate the outstanding dedication of law enforcement officers who have gone above and beyond in making a lasting difference in the lives of our athletes.

About Bill Shumard

President Emeritus of Special Olympics Southern California

Bill Shumard’s servant leadership style represents the values that are important to the law enforcement community, especially in Southern California. Throughout his fifteen years as Chief Executive Officer of Special Olympics Southern California (SOSC). Bill was instrumental in the success of SOSC’s Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) which is recognized as an international elite program. He has been not only an exceptional supporter, but continues to be an exceptional leader, partner, and friend.

The LETR Hall of Fame award is the highest honor given to individuals who demonstrate their love for our athletes, as well as provide significant and undeniable support for the Special Olympics movement. We proudly named this prestigious award after Bill Shumard who has demonstrated exceptional leadership for LETR, and more importantly, shares our love for the athletes. We value his inspiration and friendship and want his legacy to continue in all that we do for years to come!
